Herkimer Diamond Mines 45th Anniversary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Herkimer, New York) – Herkimer Diamond Mines: 45 Years of Adventures and we’re just getting started!

Imagine visiting a 500-million-year-old surface quartz mine where guests can keep everything they find! And then, create jewelry and gifts with the treasures! Continue an adventure with a delicious dinner and relax at a campsite along the picturesque West Canada Creek! Yes, that is possible at the Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort!

As part of the 45th Anniversary Celebration, the Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort will salute its many guests. Whether the guest is a family, Scout troop, public school students, lapidary artist, rockhound, or metaphysical expert, the Herkimer Diamond Mines guarantees a gem of an experience because the prospects are endless.

“We sincerely extend our gratitude to our friends and colleagues locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Herkimer Diamond has touched the lives of people in almost every country in the world and those lives have touched ours. It is our intent to offer meaningful celebrations and experiences during our 45th anniversary as a small token of our gratitude,” claims Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat, second generation owner.

In 1979, Renee’s parents purchased the property. Since 1997, the Herkimer Diamond Mines has been owned and operated by their daughter, Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat. She continued to advance the international reputation of the diamond as well as promote the resort for visitors. Now, her two sons are continuing the legacy by expanding the amenities and growing the family-focused, family-friendly resort.

“Today, as many as a thousand daily guests visit the Herkimer Diamond Mines Resort from all over the world to prospect for crystals and to camp at the nationally-acclaimed campground,” explained Samuel Shevat, third generation owner. “It is our goal to welcome more and varied consumers as we offer expanded amenities.”

The award-winning KOA Campground offers accommodation styles for everyone, including themed cottages/lodges, such as a windmill, treehouse, solar-powered, astronomy and astrology sites. Tent and RV sites spread across the campground and parallel with the West Canada Creek. With daily activities and many unusual amenities, the Resort provides all that guests could need on their trip. In 2024, an expanded section of the park will open with newly- elevated sites showcasing a grand view of the Valley with state-of-the-art glamping lodges, amenities, and views. The formal opening is scheduled for May with camping reservations available online now at KOA.com.

The Village Hall is where guests begin their adventure at the Miners’ Village. The Trading Post is home to our Herkimer Diamond jewelry pieces as well as minerals and specimens from around the world. The Rockhound Academy unfolds the history, information and unique features of the Herkimer Diamonds, plus gemstones and fossils from around the world. The Artisan Center and Gem and Fossil Sluice assist in the experience and development of keepsake, wearable or gift-able items. “All of these attractions have been enhanced with multiple offerings and special events. Plan to visit our annual First Crack experience in early April 2024,” said Samuel.

The Resort has a wide assortment of dining options: The Miners’ Table Restaurant, The Barn, The Garden with an Airstream food truck and Ice Cream Shop, and The Canteen.

The Canteen is the perfect spot to grab something to eat during a day at the Miners’ Village and mines. Located steps from the Village Hall, the café with covered seating offers a variety of lunch snack items.

Though Herkimer Diamond miners discover a grouping of diamonds in what is referred to as a “pocket” at the “table layer” of the terrain where the diamonds grow,  one won’t discover diamonds at the table -- though guests will experience some superb culinary finds at Miners’ Table, an onsite, full-service restaurant.

The Barn was moved and repurposed in 2018 to an event center and can serve up to 99 guests.  Its rustic appeal with modern touches and a splash of elegance makes it the perfect choice for a variety of gatherings. Since its opening, there have been several events, including graduation parties, birthday parties, weddings, class reunions, baby, and wedding showers.

The Garden and Scoops (ice cream) venue is a relaxed fire pit experience in the heart of the campground.

Each of these dining venues is available for individual or family use as well as for a special gathering or event.

“And now, we have an exciting management team for all food and beverage services,” Samuel Shevat stated. “The Roser family, which operates Portofino Restaurant and Events; Breezes Banquet and Event Center; and Roser Communications Network (RCN), which owns 3 area radio stations (Bug Country, KISS-FM and Talk 100.7FM), will be operating all food and beverage at the Resort.”

“We are pleased to team with the Shevat family and are excited about the prospect for the resort community as well as the local community,” said Grant Roser, co-owner of Portofino Restaurant. “Work is underway now as we plan for the Spring openings.”

Ken Roser, owner of RCN, added, “Combining the strengths of our businesses and our families will lead to synergies and mutual growth for both of us, the community and beyond.”

“Bringing the Roser families’ experiences literally to the table is a great addition to our already distinguished team. We couldn’t be more pleases or excited to welcome them as partners,” added Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat.

Herkimer Diamonds are beautiful, double-terminated crystals that are found in Herkimer County, New York. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones are believed to be close to 500 million years old. The crystals are magnificent works of nature found in the rock, appearing to have been precision cut by man and having a diamond-like geometrical shape; thus the name “Herkimer Diamonds.”
